GM may build a battery factory with LG Chem

Abstract: Since GM does not have the technology to produce batteries on its own, it is necessary to find a partner to build a battery factory. And its battery supplier LG Chem is expected to become its partner.

Foreign media reported that LG Chem is working with GM to promote the development of a joint venture for electric vehicle batteries, which plans to build a new battery factory in the United States.

Previously, in a negotiation with the United Auto Union (UAW), GM proposed a new battery factory to solve the employment problem. GM is committed to investing $7 billion (about 49.6 billion yuan) in the US to produce electric pickup trucks and build battery factories.

However, because GM does not have the technology to produce batteries on its own, it is necessary to find a partner to build a battery factory. And its battery supplier LG Chem is expected to become its partner.

According to GM's electrification strategic plan, GM plans to launch more than 20 pure electric vehicles worldwide by 2023. By 2025, nearly all of the three Buick, Chevrolet and Cadillac global brands will be electrified.

Under this circumstance, having sufficient and high-quality power battery capacity supply will become an important guarantee for the development of GM's electrification strategy, and establishing a battery joint venture with partners will also help protect its battery supply.

A few days ago, Volkswagen began a pilot production line for its power battery at its Center of Excellence in Salzgitter, Germany. About 300 experts participated in the development, testing and piloting of innovative manufacturing technologies for lithium-ion batteries.

With the accumulation of technology, Volkswagen will establish a joint venture battery plant with its partner Swedish battery manufacturer Northvolt, which will be used mainly for Volkswagen's new models.
